Also known as:  Cleocin.

Clinium is a prescription medication used to treat bacterial infections of the lungs, skin, blood, bones, joints, female reproductive system, and internal organs.

Clinium belongs to a group of drugs called lincomycin antibiotics. These work by stopping the growth of bacteria.

This medication is available as a vaginal cream, vaginal suppository, oral capsule, and oral liquid.

This medication is also available in injectable forms to be given directly into a vein (IV) or a muscle (IM) by a healthcare professional.

Common side effects of Clinium include nausea, vomiting, joint pain, heartburn, pain when swallowing, and white patches in the mouth.

Take Clinium exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not use this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Take the capsule with a full glass of water to keep it from irritating your throat.

Measure the oral liquid with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.

Clinium is sometimes given as an injection into a muscle, or injected into a vein through an IV. You may be shown how to use injections at home. Do not self-inject this medicine if you do not understand how to give the injection and properly dispose of used needles, IV tubing, and other items used to inject the medicine.

Use a disposable needle only once. Follow any state or local laws about throwing away used needles and syringes. Use a puncture-proof "sharps" disposal container (ask your pharmacist where to get one and how to throw it away). Keep this container out of the reach of children and pets.

To make sure this medicine is not causing harmful effects, you may need frequent medical tests during treatment.

If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using Clinium.

Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Clinium will not treat a viral infection such as the flu or a common cold.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Protect the injectable medicine from high heat.

Do not store the oral liquid in the refrigerator. Throw away any unused oral liquid after 2 weeks.

In the event the patient misses a dose of Clinium, the patient should take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, taking another dose of Clinium may cause an overdose which can lead to serious health complications. In this case, the missed dose should be skipped entirely to avoid an overdose potential. If an overdose of Clinium is suspected the patient should seek immediate medical intervention and assessment. An overdose may involve symptoms such as changes in mood or behaviors, thoughts of self harm, suicidal thoughts, seizures, or convulsions.

Store at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F) away from moisture and heat. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date. Keep out of the reach of children.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is a particularly virulent, rapidly adaptive pathogen that is becoming increasingly difficult to combat with existing antibiotics. Care must be taken to ensure appropriate treatment and follow-up of patients with known MRSA infections.

Group B streptococcus (GBS) is a leading cause of neonatal sepsis and is usually acquired via the woman's birth canal. GBS serotypes isolated from 200 pregnant women were determined. Serotypes V (19%) and VI (17%) were the most frequent followed by serotypes III (12%), Ia (11.5%) and IV (10%); 17% of the strains were non-typable. All isolates were susceptible to penicillin, 96% to erythromycin and 97.5% to clindamycin. The emergence of new GBS serotypes has important implications for vaccine prevention strategies.

Hamsters can survive a course of clindamycin if they are held in a protected environment. Inoculation of Clostridium difficile regularly results in fatal enterocecitis in such animals but is without effect in untreated animals. These findings suggest that in the development of enterocecitis, clindamycin treatment and infection with C. difficile are separate events, and they imply that hamsters usually acquire C. difficile from environmental sources. Environments appear to differ in the risk of exposure to C. difficile, high-, medium-, and low-risk areas being recognizable. Once introduced, C. difficile may spread from animal to animal. Parallel with the incidence and epidemiology of human antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis are discussed.

The Group B streptococcus (Streptococcus agalactiae) is a pathogen of increasing importance in human disease. We therefore studied the susceptibility of clinical isolates of S. agalactiae to penicillin G, erythromycin, azithromycin and clindamycin using National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards methodology, and we also determined the phenotypes of macrolide-lincosamide susceptibility and the resistance genes implicated in a group of selected isolates of the different phenotypes. We used 221 isolates collected between 1997 and 1999 in two Health Authority Areas in Móstoles and Granada, Spain. The minimal concentration for 90% inhibition (MIC90) for penicillin G was 0.12 mg/L and all the isolates tested were susceptible. One hundred and eighty-five (83.7%) were susceptible to erythromycin and azithromycin and 191 (86.4%) were susceptible to miocamycin and clindamycin. Twenty-three isolates (10.4%) had a constitutive MLSB phenotype, seven (3.2%) an inducible phenotype, and six (2.7%) an M phenotype. All except one of the MLSB phenotype isolates tested (n = 23) carried erm genes; in two strains with the mef (A) gene, all the M phenotype (n = 6) isolates tested carried mef genes, while erm and mef (A) genes were absent in all the macrolide-lincosamide-susceptible (n = 12) isolates tested. In our environment, resistance to macrolide and lincosamide in S. agalactiae was present in 10-16% of the isolates. The majority of resistant strains had the MLSB phenotype.

One hundred and forty-eight C. difficile strains were resistant to at least one antibiotic and 82 (55%) were multidrug resistant. In particular, 48% of these isolates were resistant to erythromycin, clindamycin, moxifloxacin and rifampicin. New genetic elements or determinants conferring resistance to erythromycin/clindamycin or tetracycline were identified. Even if most multiresistant strains carried an erm(B) gene, quite a few were erm(B) negative. In-depth analysis of the underlying mechanism in these isolates was carried out, including analysis of 23S rDNA and the ribosomal proteins L4 and L22. Interestingly, resistance to rifampicin was observed in multidrug-resistant strains in association with resistance to fluoroquinolones. Mutations in the rpo(B) and gyrA genes were identified as the cause of resistance to these antibiotics, respectively.

In samples taken from orthopedic patients we observed the predominance of Gram-positive anaerobic bacteria. Some of them were part of the normal flora but they should not be excluded as an etiology agents of infection. The specimens taken from patients treated in surgical wards showed the presence of a mixed microflora, which included aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, primarily Gram-negative rods. Rational empirical therapy of infections with anaerobes should be mainly based on the resistance pattern in each ward and hospital. In view of the increasing in the number of resistant strains is necessary to monitor drug resistance of anaerobic bacteria.

The recovery of beta-hemolytic streptococci from throat specimens, from November 1, 1988 to January 6, 1989, was analyzed. Beta-hemolytic streptococci were isolated from 927 of the 5050 throat cultures (18.4%). The rate of isolation of bacitracin-resistant beta-hemolytic streptococci was 9.6%. The frequency of group B, C, D, F and G beta-hemolytic streptococci was found 14.6%, 38.2%, 3.4%, 1.1% and 42.7% respectively. All strains were susceptible to penicillin, erythromycin and clindamycin.

This prevalence study was conducted to compare the counts, types and antimicrobial resistance profiles of bacterial flora on the hands of individuals in the community to that of nurses at a nearby university teaching hospital, with an intense hand hygiene regimen. Hand cultures were obtained from 204 individuals during a home visit and 119 nurses in two neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). The mean total log counts of organisms were 5.73 and 5.24 for the homemakers [defined as the person (usually the mother) who is the primary person responsible for arranging childcare, cooking, cleaning etc] and nurse hands, respectively (P<0.0001). Significantly more homemakers had Acinetobacter lwoffii, Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas Cephalexin Unit Dose aeruginosa, P. fluorescens/putida, and Staphylococcus aureus on their hands compared with the nurses (all P<0.05). However, significantly more nurses had Enterococcus faecalis, S. epidermidis, and S. warneri on their hands (P<0.05). Of note, the hands of nurses harboured significantly more S. epidermidis strains resistant to amoxicillin/clavulanate, cefazolin, clindamycin, erythromycin, and oxacillin and S. warneri resistant to amoxicillin/clavulanate, cefazolin, clindamycin, and oxacillin (P<0.05). Surprisingly, significantly more trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole-resistant S. epidermidis and ciprofloxacin-resistant S. warneri was recovered from the hands of homemakers (P<0.05). This study demonstrates differences in prevalence, bacterial composition and antimicrobial resistance of hand flora of hospital personnel compared with homemakers. Moreover, the hands of homemakers may serve as community reservoirs for antimicrobial resistant strains of clinical importance.

The in-vitro antibacterial activity of teicoplanin, a new glycopeptide antibiotic, previously named teichomycin A2, was tested against 258 gram-positive anaerobic bacterial strains, recently clinically isolated, by measuring the minimum inhibitory concentrations. Comparisons were made with other drugs, clindamycin, rifampicin, netilmicin, enoxacin, vancomycin, widely utilized for the treatment of bacterial infections. Teicoplanin was very active against the tested species and showed the highest activity against all the tested strains, with a geometric mean of MICs, a MIC 50 and MIC 90 of 0 Clavam Bid Syrup .125, 0.12 and 0.5 microg/ml, respectively.

The aim of the study was to investigate antimicrobial susceptibilities of bovine Helcococcus ovis isolates and to detect genes encoding for H. ovis erythromycin and tetracycline resistance. Twenty-nine isolates were included and the minimal inhibitory Omnicef Capsule concentrations (MICs) of seven antimicrobials were determined using test conditions as given in an approved CLSI guideline for the pyridoxal-dependent Abiotrophia spp. and Granulicatella spp. Furthermore, the macrolide resistance phenotype was examined by the erythromycin-clindamycin double-disk test (D-zone test). Erythromycin MICs of ≥ 8 μg/ml were found in three (10%) isolates which also presented the macrolide, lincosamide, and streptogramin B (MLS(B)) resistance phenotype, either constitutive or inducible. The erm(B) gene was detected in one of these isolates. Increased tetracycline MICs (≥ 8 μg/ml) were obtained for 24 (83%) isolates, mostly associated with the tet(M) gene alone (n=21) or both the tet(L) and tet(M) genes (n=2). The MICs determined for penicillin, ampicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, and cephalothin did not indicate resistance to these antimicrobials. The study suggests that resistance to MLS(B) antimicrobials and tetracycline is frequent in H. ovis. Moreover, this is the first report about occurrence of the resistance genes erm(B), tet(L), and tet(M) in the Helcococcus genus.

In a randomized, double-blind Amoxil Dose study, 48 women with symptomatic bacterial vaginosis were assigned to receive either 5 g of 2% clindamycin vaginal cream daily or 500 mg metronidazole oral tablets twice a day for 7 days. After completion of therapy, there was no significant difference in cure rates (clindamycin 72% versus metronidazole 87%). One month later, 61% of the patients in each group were still cured. Adverse reactions were mild in both groups. We conclude that clindamycin cream is a safe, well tolerated, and effective alternative to oral metronidazole for treatment of bacterial vaginosis.

Daptomycin (Cubicin) is a bactericidal lipopeptide antibiotic that was approved in February 2006 for the European market, including Norway, Metronidazole Flagyl Drug Class for the treatment of patients with complicated skin and soft tissue infections caused by Gram-positive cocci. Daptomycin is administered intravenously and eliminated mainly by the kidneys. Dose reduction is therefore necessary in patients with impaired renal function. The drug is active only against Gram-positive cocci. Daptomycin therapy of patients with complicated skin and soft tissue infections caused by Gram-positive cocci, is as effective as standard therapy with intravenous semi-synthetic penicillin or vancomycin. The agent is usually well tolerated, but side effects in skeletal muscles are more prevalent than with semi-synthetic penicillins or vancomycin. To prevent development of daptomycin resistance, the agent should be reserved for the treatment of patients with infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus that are resistant to antibiotics commonly used for the treatment of skin and soft tissue infections, e.g. penicillins or clindamycin.

Treatment of bacterial vaginosis with clindamycin vaginal cream did not reduce preterm delivery or low birth weight. Although clindamycin vaginal cream is an effective treatment for bacterial vaginosis, intravaginal treatment would not be effective against bacterial vaginosis-associated microorganisms harbored in the upper genital tract. Tablet Novamox 250 Dt Systemic treatment may be required to eradicate upper tract infection to reduce preterm delivery.

The necrotizing fasciitis is a medico-surgical emergency, characterized by the rapid speard of the infection Azithral Xp Dosage in the subcutaneous tissue, involving fascia superficialis. Peaucity of cutaneous findings early in the course of the disease makes diagnosis a challenge for physician. Pain out of proportion to clinical findings, fever and signs of systemic toxicity are the keys in identification of necrotizing fasciitis. Delayed diagnosis lead to sepsis syndrom and/or multiple organ failure and correlate with poor oucome. Radiolographs, CT-scan or MRI are main radiologic studies, but such procedures should never delay surgical intervention. Intravenous antibiotics, fluid and electrolyte management and analgesia are needed in addition to radical debridment. Clindamycin, hyperbaric oxygen therapy and intravenous immunoglobulins are discussed treatments. Only prompt recognition and immediat care warrant a lower mortality and morbidity for this life-threatening infection.

Ten cases of antibiotic-associated colitis (AAC) were identified at a hospital in Washington, D.C., from March 17 to May 9, 1979. No geographic clustering of cases was found, nor was an association with increased use of antibiotics demonstrated. Exposure to aminoglycosides, cephalosporins, and clindamycin was associated with AAC, as was a history of enemas in the seven days before the onset of illness (P=0.045). This association was strengthened when gastrointestinal procedures-defined as (1) three or more enemas per week, (2) the insertion of a nasogastric tube for two or more days, or (3) gastrointestinal surgery-were performed within seven days of the onset of illness (P=0.007). Clostridium difficile was not isolated from the hospital environments, nursing personnel, or family members of the patients. C. difficile was isolated from stool specimens of five (36%) of 14 patients who served as controls.

We treated 26 patients with acute toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis with clindamycin between 1974 and 1982. Four patients were treated with clindamycin alone and 17 with clindamycin and prednisolone. Five patients received clindamycin and prednisolone, sulfadiazine, pyrimethamine, or cryocoagulation, or a combination of these. All patients with the acute disease had the characteristic foci and a positive titer on the Sabin-Feldman dye test of at least 1:16. Other causes of retinochoroiditis were excluded. All but two patients, who developed diarrhea after two weeks, received clindamycin for a minimum of three weeks. All patients improved after two weeks of treatment, but two patients with lesions larger than 2 disk diameters required an additional six weeks of treatment to heal completely. During follow-up periods ranging from 18 months to seven years (mean, three years) there have been only two recurrences (7.7%). Complications with clindamycin treatment were limited to gastrointestinal upsets, diarrhea, and skin rash. There were no cases of pseudomembranous colitis, the most serious reported complication of clindamycin use.
