Sulfa is effective in a variety of upper and lower respiratory tract infections, renal and urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal tract infections, skin and wound infections, septicaemias and other infections caused by sensitive organisms.

Each Sulfa tablet contains 80 mg trimethoprim and 400 mg sulfamethoxazole.

Each Sulfa DS (double strength) tablet contains 160 mg trimethoprim and 800 mg sulfamethoxazole.

Adults: The usual adult dosage in the treatment of urinary tract infections is 1 Sulfa DS (double strength) tablet or 2 Sulfa tablets every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days. An identical daily dosage is used for 5 days in the treatment of shigellosis.

Children: The recommended dose for children with urinary tract infections or acute otitis media is 40 mg/kg sulfamethoxazole and 8 mg/kg trimethoprim per 24 hours, given in two divided doses every 12 hours for 10 days. An identical daily dosage is used for 5 days in the treatment of shigellosis.

Often, no treatment is needed for an antibiotic overdose. Usually, you'll need to watch for stomach upset and possibly diarrhea. In those cases, you should give extra fluids.

Store at room temperature between 20 to 25 degrees C (68 to 77 degrees F) away from moisture, light and heat. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date. Keep out of the reach of children.

Eleven antibiotics were tested against 1,194 Gram negative bacilli isolated from urinary tract infections at the National University Hospital Center at Cotonou. Among the betalactams tested, only cefotaxime remained active against most of the bacteria tested: 90% of the strains of Escherichia coli and 75% of the strains of Enterobacter cloacae were sensitive. Ampicilline, on the other hand, had lost its activity even on strains which are usually the most susceptible. Thirteen percent of the E. coli strains were sensitive. This reduction in antibiotic activity against bacterial strains in Cotonou, which concerned to various degrees the tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, cotrimoxazole, is less pronounced for the amino-sides (gentamicine and netilmicine), and the quinolones of which nalidixique acid was active against 83.9% of the strains of E. coli. The low frequency of isolation of wild type strains (sensitive to betalactams) is probably the consequence of strong selection pressure due to a massive, and uncontrolled use of antibiotics in Cotonou.

Mixed opportunistic infection with Pneumocystis carinii and Candida prior to cytotoxic therapy in a young male diagnosed as having acute non-lymphoblastic leukaemia resulted in early catastrophe. The role of awareness of this complication and its prompt management is discussed.

The patients with malignancies showed shorter durations of symptoms before PCP was diagnosed. The levels of serum markers and the oxygenation index did not differ. CT showed diffuse or widespread ground-glass opacity (GGO) in all of the patients evaluated. None of the AIDS patients demonstrated consolidation, whereas half of the patients with malignancy showed consolidation along with GGO. The extent of GGO scored on CT images was significantly greater in the AIDS patients. No correlation was observed between the CT findings and other clinical parameters. All of the AIDS patients recovered from PCP, whereas six patients with malignancies died within a month after the onset of PCP.

A 13 year old girl presented with auricular chondritis and recurrent episodes of unexplained chest pain, arthritis, bronchitis, conjunctivitis, prolonged steroid resistant alopecia areata, and a history of recurrent tonsillitis. Both the mosaic of autoimmunity and relapsing polychondritis were considered in the differential diagnosis. The patient was successfully treated with co-trimoxazole. The significance of co-trimoxazole, which is an antibiotic and an immunomodulatory drug, in the treatment of autoimmune disease is discussed.

Hypersensitivity reactions in patients receiving sulfonamide antibiotics have been frequently documented in the literature, but cross-reactivity with sulfonamide non-antibiotics rarely has been reported.

In Finland the usage of trimethoprim (TMP) alone constitutes about 25% of all drug usage for urinary tract infections. Despite this widespread use the proportion of TMP-resistant strains is almost same as it is in countries where only the combination of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ) has been used. In general, strains resistant to TMP were seldom found; only in closed wards did the use of trimethoprim result in an increase in the proportion of resistant strains. In the treatment of acute urinary tract infections, TMP alone (dose, 160 mg taken twice daily for seven days) gave a result as good as that of TMP-SMZ (94.5% vs. 90.6%) and a better result than cephalexin (98.3% vs. 82.1%). TMP proved suitable as a single agent in the treatment of urinary tract infections in outpatients. In a study of long-term treatment, TMP (dose, 100 mg taken once daily), was more effective than nitrofurantoin, methenamine hippurate, TMP-SMZ, or placebo. Fewer adverse effects were associated with TMP than with the other drugs.

Patients' baseline demographic and clinical characteristics, as well as characteristics of their VAP, were documented. The primary study outcome was the rate of clinical success in patients with S. maltophilia VAP; a secondary outcome was microbiologic plus clinical success rate in these patients. Standard definitions were employed to determine these outcomes related to VAP treatment. The study population had higher injury severity scores and a higher rate of traumatic brain injury than is typically observed in the study's intensive care unit. The median time to diagnosis of S. maltophilia VAP was 15 days (interquartile range 11-24 days). Stenotrophomonas maltophilia was the sole organism isolated in 34% of patients; the other patients had polymicrobial VAP. Despite inadequate empiric antibiotic therapy being administered to 97% of the patients, the overall clinical success rate was 87%. The microbiologic plus clinical success rate was 82%. The most common treatments for S. maltophilia VAP were trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (77 patients received monotherapy, 9 received combination therapy) and ciprofloxacin (6 patients received monotherapy, 8 received combination therapy); all-cause and VAP-related mortality rates were 13% and 7%, respectively.

A robust and sensitive solid-phase extraction followed by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization mass spectrometric (LC-ESI-MS) method for determination of antibiotics viz., fluoroquinolones, sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim and cephalosporines in surface waters was developed. The Zinacef Dose In Pediatrics sample recoveries on Oasis HLB cartridges were found to be >80%. Identification was carried out by LC-ESI-MS/MS. The positive ion ESI mass spectra containing the peaks of quasimolecular ions [M+H](+) allowed the determination of molecular masses whereas the fragment ions obtained by MS/MS of [M+H](+) ions permitted the structural assignment. Quantification was carried out by selective ion monitoring (SIM) using the quasimolecular ions [M+H](+) of the parent compounds. The detection and quantification limits were found to be in the range of 0.6-8.1 and 2.0-24.0 microg/L. The surface waters of different lakes and tanks of Hyderabad, India were found to contain a few antibiotics.

The effect of the effluent from a chicken meat-processing plant on the antibiotic-resistant bacterial profile was investigated in an almost closed water reticulation system. Of the 273 faecal coliform isolates 256 (93%) were resistant to one or more of the eight antibiotics tested. The most prevalent isolates were for the beta-lactam antibiotics ampicillin and cephalothin followed by the sulphonamides sulphatriad and cotrimoxazole. Eleven different resistance patterns were identified with a single pattern, comprising of ampicillin-, cephalothin-, streptomycin-, sulphatriad-, cotrimoxazole- and tetracyclin-resistant isolates, dominating the meat-processing effluent. An apparent correlation was observed between the specific use of certain antibiotics and the prevalence of the corresponding resistant bacterial isolates. The drugs used to treat the occasional infections, belonging to the beta-lactam and sulphonamide group of antibiotics, seemed to have a more pronounced effect on the antibiotic Metrogyl V Gel -resistant bacterial profile in the primary water source than those drugs used as feed additives, oxytetracyclin and the aminoglycoside flavomycin.

Measures aimed at preventing complications and slowing progression of type-1 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) can potentially reduce morbidity. Although little is known about the use of such measures, such data are critical for program planning. This study was performed to quantify the frequency and patterns of use for such interventions. We enrolled 1,171 persons infected with HIV, but without an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) defining diagnosis, in a multicenter prospective study of the pulmonary complications of HIV infection. Participants were homosexual/bisexual men, injection drug users (IDUs), or female sexual contacts of HIV-infected men. Centers were university-based and geographically dispersed across the United States. Standardized questionnaires were administered on entry and at three-month or six-month intervals; we correlated use of general and HIV-related preventive measures before entry and during the first three years in study with clinical/epidemiologic characteristics. Overall use of preventive interventions was low; only one Flagyl 2000 Mg Dose third of study entrants had used such measures. Use was greatest among those with advanced HIV infection, but only half used preventive measures on entry; IDUs were less likely than homosexuals to use these services. Although use of interventions such as anti-Pneumocystis and antiretroviral agents increased during study participation, general measures such as pneumococcal vaccine and tuberculosis prophylaxis were used by less than 30% of those eligible for use. Among IDUs, cumulative use of these measures remained below 20% during the first three years of this study. We conclude that HIV-infected persons underuse preventive interventions, particularly general measures.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

One hundred strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis were tested by the double-disk agar diffusion method for their susceptibility to cephalothin, to sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, and to combinations of these drugs. Forty-five Antirobe 75 Mg Prezzo strains showed a bridging inhibition zone between the two disks, suggesting a synergistic effect of the combination of cephalothin plus sulfamethoxozole-trimethoprim against these strains. Ten of these strains were retested against the individual drugs and their combination by the twofold broth dilution method. No strain showed higher susceptibility to any combination as compared with cephalothin alone.
